Spirituality in Astrology
Spirituality is different from religious. To see religious inclination of a person, one should observe the placement of venus and 9th house of any reference chart. Religion means following certain prescribed tradition and perform rituals taught by religious leader. Venus becomes important here because venus is Shukracharya, the guru of asuras. He follows typical religious (dharma) code of conduct. Following dharma includes the materialistic desires. And it has nothing to do with spirituality. Spirituality is basically seeking, not seeking god in particular but seeking the purpose of life, for example. It is something which totally different from seeking material things. Here Jupiter becomes important.
Jupiter:
Jupiter is the ruler of Askash tatva (ether element) which is itself a mystical and occult element and very significant for spiritual inclination. It aspects 5th and 9th house apart from 7th house. And for observing spiritual inclination also 5th and 9th house are to be observed. Also, 12th house in Kalpurush chart is Pisces, which is also rules by Jupiter and has a lot importance for spirituality as it is the house of moksha - salvation (enlightenment-nirvana). In astrology, legs of a particular signs are considered as attachment with materialistic aspects of life. For example, a ram is a sign of Aries having four legs, means more contact with earth (or materialistic things). Same way, human signs have only two legs and shows less attachment. But on the other hand, the sign of Pisces is fish which has no legs and hence shows absence of attachment towards materialistic things.
Why 1st, 5th and 9th house are important for spiritual inclination?
Firstly, it is a triangle, sharing same element. In kalpurush chart, the 1st sign is Aries - a fiery sign, 5th is leo - a fiery sign & and 9th Sagittarius again a fiery sign. So there is natural harmony among these signs. The first house shows true self - soul. The 5th house shows intelligence- which is a key for spirituality. The 9th house is dharma bhav. Dharma means duty, what one is supposed to do. The 1st house of in Kalpurusha chart is Aries - the house of Mars and shows birth. The 8th house of the same is also ruled by Mars and shows death. Meaning there by that one’s life starts with Aries and ends with Scorpio. But the 9th house is the beginning of the journey that starts after death. That’s why 9th house is important and should be considered for spiritual journey.
Ketu:
Rahu shows strong desires towards materialistic things. And as Ketu is just opposite to Rahu, it shows strong desires for non materialistic things i.e. spirituality. But at end, Ketu is also malefic planet as it shows strong desires for non material things, but no matter for what the desire is, a desire is believed to be something as a barrier for salvation. So we can say Ketu acts as an initiation for spirituality due to strong desire, but can also become a hurdle at one point of time. One may get stuck here and need a guru (jupiter) to move on from the desires of enlightenment, as it can bind one.
Also, Rahu-Ketu are always at 180 degrees from each other. However, while observing divisional charts, we may find them togather (particularly divisional charts beyond D10) which shows that the two opposite desires have come to a balance (as divisional charts beyond Dashmansh chart shows higher aspects of one’s life).
Saturn:
Saturn is a planet of death and the journey of spirituality also begins with the fact that death is the only reality of one’s life. If one can keep in mind that his death is certain one will naturally be spiritual. The thought of death is the first step of the spiritual journey. Saturn forces one to face bitter realities and makes him/her to be naturally spiritual slowly and gradually.
Which charts to be observed?
Obviously, Lagna chart as it shows true self. Moon chart also as general practice. Also divisional charts like Panchamansh chart (D5), Navmansh chart (D9) and Vishamsha chart (D20). And bhav chalit chart can also be considered.
Let’s take a look at some example charts.
Example 1 : (Charts of Person A)
As it can be observed that in lagna chart, Ketu is at 1st house, Saturn along with Jupiter at 9th house naturally shows inclination towards spirituality. Here it can also be noted that mercury has joined with them so it shows that one will use his intellect (mercury) to have his path on spirituality. And also Venus is sitting in 9th house with them which shows that person will start his spiritual journey initially with traditional religious (9th house and Venus) and then will move further due to the influence of Saturn and Ketu, letter on in his life.
Also the sign of spiritual inclination can be seen due to Jupiter’s placement in 12th house.
Vimshamsha (D20) chart is very crucial to observe spiritual aspects and here it can be seen that Ketu is in conjunction with Rahu and Ketu is at Lagna. Also Saturn sitting in 12th shows attractions towards spirituality. Here it is interesting to see that this persona’s spiritual journey will begin with strong desires towards mysticism (Ketu in 1st) after fulfilment of materialistic desires. And will reach to an upper state where no desire will remain (Saturn in 12th).
Bhav Chalit chart also reveals the same thing as Ketu and Saturn plus Jupiter are situated in 12th and 9th house respectively.
Example 2 : (Charts of person B)
The above Lagna chart shows that the person will start his spiritual journey with typical rituals prescribed in religious (Venus in 9th). Such people start their journey with some bhagva vastra and malas, some tilaks and practising traditional yogashanas for example.
Here, in Navamasha chart also, the 5th house is having Saturn and Jupiter along with exalted Sun.
In above Moon chart also the foot prints of spiritual attractions can be observed. Ketu and Saturn being in 5th and 9th houses. More inclined towards spiritual things psychologically rather than physical or showing outside.
Again in Vimshamsha Chart (D20) venus is in ascendant. Rahu and Ketu together (though it it normal in divisional charts as discussed above). And also Moon and Jupiter aspecting each other from 4th and 10th house makes chart powerful.
In above Panchamsha chart also Jupiter is in ascendant in his own sign of Pisces (Pisces is important for spirituality, right?) and Rahu Ketu conjunction (rahu ketu conjunction in divisional charts below D10 is not usual) and also Venus in 9th house, as discussed above.
Also in the above Bhav Chalit chart, Saturn in ascendant and Venus in 9th are in mission to make the person’s spiritual journey successful.
